Direct mail using a coupon can be a great option to really track your results and bring in new business!  You might hear from other business owners that direct mail doesn’t work because you really can’t track the results.  Well, if you just send a post card or letter and you target the wrong audience, then yes you are right, it will not work!  But if you have an offer that is time sensitive (“must call now”, “call before Friday,” etc.…), the mail piece actually has an incentive for someone to respond, and you are targeting the right audience, then yes it will work!

I firmly believe that direct mail will remain a viable channel for educated marketers for the foreseeable future.  However, I think the trend of cutting back on mail volume is here to stay.  Direct marketing will be used judiciously and only where it makes the most sense.  It’s getting tougher and tougher to stand out in a crowd, but using a multi-channel marketing campaign will enhance the perception of your product and in turn boost your sales.  You still need to contact a potential prospect at least 3 times.  Try calling them; email them, text them, etc.…. Use at least 2 methods when trying to capture your prospect’s attention.

Sometimes a weak economy can present challenges to marketers of any type.  How do we do more with less?  How do we sell products to people, or companies, who can’t afford them?  This type of economic environment presents unique opportunities for direct marketers though.  After all, our results are measurable.  The faltering economy could mean a renewed interest in coupons as shoppers are more focused on the bottom line.  Like the money guru Dave Ramsey says “Debt is dumb, cash is king and the paid off home mortgage has taken the place of the BMW as the status symbol of choice.”  There’s no stigma to getting anything on discount.  Now, it’s a sense of pride to see how much money you can save.  My favorite kind of direct marketing offers are the “buy one get one free” offers.  Who doesn’t like something for free?
