Washington, D.C.—The U.S. Postal Service, spurred by strong growth in its shipping business, has enhanced its Priority Mail service to include scheduled delivery and free insurance.

To be more competitive with such rivals as FedEx and UPS, the Postal Service will offer day-specific delivery—one-, two- or three-day—for its Priority Mail service, based on the origin and destination of a package. USPS tracking information will be more prominent on customer receipts and online, the Postal Service said in a statement.

The scheduled-delivery products can be supplemented with up to $100 of free insurance coverage.

For the month of June, the Postal Service reported that its shipping and package services, representing almost one-quarter of its business, were its strongest performing category, with volume up 2.7% for the month and revenue up 7.4% compared with June of last year.
